The idea for Nerd Wars! came from watching the two leads, brothers Michael Manuel Peña and Nathaniel Peña, act like goofballs while dressed as nerds for a photo shoot. The young actors were quite amused, as they had never really dressed or acted like nerds before, so they milked it by jumping around and play-fighting. While watching and cracking up, their father (the writer and director of Nerd Wars!) wondered "What if two nerds really had a battle?" The family sat down and fleshed out some concepts, leading to a 14 page script completed in October 2010. Pre-production started almost immediately, including getting all the requirements fulfilled for getting the project made under a Screen Actors Guild agreement.
Casting took place mostly via online video submissions starting in March 2011. Over 150 candidates submitted for the role of Mr. Chen, played by Alfonso Freeman (son of Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman) and over 50 candidates submitted for the role of "Doris," played by singer and actress Lia Marie Johnson of Kids React and Teens React fame. In total, about 25 cast members were picked from a field of over 400 who submitted for the project.
Armed with a ultra-tiny budget of less than $10,000 (all of it our personal money) principal photography took place on four Saturdays in May 2011 in various locations around Los Angeles. Some shots in the cafeteria sequence were shot against a green screen with a virtual cafeteria background added later. The shoot went down pretty much flawlessly (aside from having to scramble after losing one of our locations), and the environment on set was definitely like one big family get-together. Some of our cast members said it was the best shoot they had ever worked on, and that probably has to do with our viewpoint that making a movie should be fun, and you should treat people well while doing it.
The film was premiered for cast and crew on November 20th, 2011 at the Screen Actors Guild in Hollywood, California and was released for online rental on Thanksgiving. We are floored with the interest our little movie has generated around the world! So far, we have had visitors from the following countries: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Costa Rica, Croatia, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and of course, the USA.
